Most of us will be unable to travel to outer space, but we can with readily available training visit the weightless world of inner space beneath the surface of our oceans, lakes and rivers. Unlike outer space that is a lifeless void, the underwater world is a place of overwhelming beauty, prolific in life and inhabited by sea creatures that would make the best science fiction writer proud.

The thrill of diving begins with the certification class that transforms us terrestrial beings into aquanauts and those first breaths taken underwater are never forgotten. Once certified, a whole new world is opened up and the remaining two thirds of the planet earth becomes our watery playground.

A descent onto a tropical coral reef is an amazing experience and divers observe an underseascape that is unrivaled in its beauty. These vibrant, neon hued, living structures are full of life and provide a swirling kaleidoscope of color and motion.

The ocean holds life from the minute to the magnificent and divers are amazed by everything from tiny micro organisms to behemoth pelagic monsters. The wide variety of diving environments and the diversity of marine life make every dive a true inner space trip.

Going diving is actually an excellent way for the family to spend time together. It’s a really interesting way to get closer with your family and take in nature’s beauty.

If your kids are certified for diving as well as you, you can actually scuba dive in certain levels of water. It’s a good way to see some of the aquatic life deep under the water. Also there are camps that teach children how to dive properly as well as proper procedures for going underwater. The whole story can be found at http://uwtreasures.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/escape-the-heat-with-an-underwater-adventure-in-the-uae/ Dive tours are great for getting a brand new experience in water. This is a lot better than going on a trip to the museum as it’s good exercise and a first hand lesson on what sea life really looks like up close.

Swimming is a very relaxing activity by itself, but going on an underwater adventure just adds to it. Take a trip to the Caribbean where you can really enjoy some great aquatic life with the beautiful, clear waters. The Bahamas is an excellent place for diving. It’s an overall great place to take a vacation, so it would be nice to spend a week or so there and enjoy the underwater sea life.

Are you searching for the best diving spot? Try Monad Shoal in Malapascua, Philippines. Monad Shoal is a world famous diving spot and a sunken island famous for its Thresher Shark.

Be sure to have a certification from the sport’s major organizations, these are the Professional Association of Dive Instructors or PADI and the National Association of Underwater Instructors or NAUI organization. Certification is required so as to verify your skills in diving.

Gear up and get ready to dive. Basic requirements for the dive are wetsuit, mask, fins, buoyancy compensator or BC, tank, regulator, diving device or computer and weights. These are just the required gear for diving. The gadget gear would include high technology devices such as laser pointers, underwater camera, underwater slates, strobes, video recorders, lights, lift bags, lines and reels.

Speaking underwater should be easy if you know the basic hand signals. “Thumbs up” for ascending while “thumbs down” for descending. The “OK” signal is also thumbs up but stationary. Advance divers have developed hand signals that would relate to danger such as shark presence hand signal. What are you waiting for, gear up and dive at Monad Shoal and have a glimpse of the Thresher Sharks.

There’s something to be said for the thrill of a perfectly cooked steak or cheap Direct TV packages but what about the thrill you get from driving on one of the world’s most dangerous roads? If you’re interested in taking on the asphalt at one of these sights, call an ambulance FIRST.
Road of Death: Well, with a name like that you know it’s not kidding. This gravel road snakes around a mountain in Bolivia and the drivers who are regularly on it think nothing of running you off the road. Oh, and watch out for the bikers and occasional landslides, too.
Grimsel Pass: It’s not the most dangerous but it is pretty insane. It’s a multiple-switchback affair high in the mountains of Switzerland and it’s usually covered in snow, so there’s that.
Splugen Pass: Italy has quite a few roads on the big list but Splugen Pass is the most dramatic. It snakes back and forth (and back and forth) down a sloping hillside and there are no real speed limits so watch out.

Can you imagine leaving your boat and diving back millions of years? Many diving enthusiasts take their adventuresome nature to the next level by fossil hunting in some of the worlds oldest underwater places. Of course the places you dive do not have to be that old considering the nature of erosion, you just have to know where to look for your fossils in order to find them, and of course know what you are looking at.

One of the most popular fossils people look for are sharks teeth. They are easy to identify and you can literally find hundreds of them on the water body floor. Off the coast of North Carolina you can find a rich trove of Megalodon teeth with divers recovering about 70-80 teeth per trip. The teeth were 3-5 inches in length and they even recovered a couple of 6 inch whoopers! Prehistoric Mako and Great White sharks teeth are also found off the South Carolina coast but, you do not have to travel all the way to the Carolina’s however to find your sharks teeth. You can also find them further inland in the Ozark lakes and sometimes along the more historic river beds.Take a look here to learn more: Sea life: Great white sharks

For competative, amateur, and just leisure divers, finding out about competitions in your area (or nation & world wide if you are competative) is a great way to get involved in competing, and really showing off your skills. There are many ways to learn about the different competitions, and when they are going to be held.

Finding out about different diving competitions is key to improving your diving skills. The right competition will pair you off against the most competative divers, and will help make you a better diver in the process.Get more information here. http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2011/07/07/coolest-dive-spot-around.html?sid101 Finding the right competition for you is pretty easy to do.

The first source is a local diving club (or facility) in your area. These clubs will hold events and competitions. Just go into the local club in your area and ask for a calendar of competitions. Another source to find out competition dates is online. This will allow you to search for local as well as national competitions which you might be interested in. It will give you deadline dates to enter and the fees which must be paid. Either of these sources will give you lists of competitions available to you. Competing against other divers is the best way to really improve your capabilities.

Scuba diving is one of the most awesome sports around and one of the only ways that the common person can visit an alien world. Every diver has his or her own interests and there is a wide scope of activities and underwater attractions that will satisfy everyone’s tastes. Many dive to just revel in the splendor of the underwater world, others to photograph it and others who search for historical artifacts that have found their way into the watery world.

One of the most fascinating activities for divers is wreck diving and there is no end to the amount of boats that have been lost throughout history from storms, collisions, wars and ill luck. For the recreational wreck diver there are many wrecks in shallow water and many dive operators worldwide transport their diving clients to safe and well surveyed sites. There are also deep wrecks that are visited by highly experienced advanced divers.

The certifying agencies offer wreck diving courses for recreational divers and it is a must to have proper training. Advanced divers can safely dive the outside of many wrecks, but to penetrate these submerged ghost ships takes very advanced training and well planned out techniques.

Many people unknowingly believe that there is only one scuba certification, when in fact, the certifying agencies offer a continuing education program. The basic or openwater certification prepares the diver to dive to depths and in like conditions of those in which they learned. The new diver holding an openwater certification is ill prepared to fly Palancar Reef on a swift drift dive or descend down a plunging wall in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Once earning an openwater certification, the diver can enroll in an advanced openwater course and learn the basics of night diving, deep diving, underwater navigation and search and salvage. In addition, there is a long list of specialty courses to enhance the diver’s experience and skill including underwater photography, deep diving, wreck diving, high altitude diving and underwater hunting and collecting. In recent years recreational divers have had the opportunity to learn technical diving including utilizing mixed gas for deep forays to shipwrecks and wall exploration.

Openwater opportunities abound for the advanced diver in offshore kelp beds, on drift dives over coral reefs, descents down steep walls and in conditions that are out of the realm for the less experienced diver. Keep diving, keep learning.
